Delhi to Manali — 540 km of highway, mountain roads, dhaba food, and some of the most stunning scenery in India. It's the quintessential North Indian road trip, and every group of friends, every family, and every couple should do it at least once. But it's also a long drive (12-14 hours), and doing it right requires some planning. Here's everything we've learned from running this route thousands of times since 2010.
The Route: Delhi to Manali
There's essentially one main route:
Delhi → Karnal → Kurukshetra → Chandigarh → Bilaspur → Sundernagar → Mandi → Kullu → Manali
The first 250 km to Chandigarh is on the superb 6-lane NH44. After Chandigarh, the road narrows, and real mountain driving begins past Mandi. The last 100 km through the Kullu-Manali valley is the most scenic part — pine forests, the Beas river running alongside, and glimpses of snow-capped peaks.
Road Conditions — What to Expect
- Delhi to Chandigarh (250 km): Excellent 6-lane highway. Fast, smooth, well-lit. Best section of the journey.
- Chandigarh to Mandi (200 km): Good 2-lane highway through the Shivalik foothills. Some construction zones and truck traffic. Manageable.
- Mandi to Manali (90 km): This is the mountain section. Winding roads, hairpin bends, narrow stretches. Beautiful but demanding. Our drivers handle this daily.
Best Time to Travel
- March-June: Summer. Green valleys, pleasant weather in Manali (15-25°C). Roads are clear. Peak tourist season — book early.
- July-September: Monsoon. Landslides and road closures possible. We recommend avoiding this period unless you're flexible with timing.
- October-November: Autumn. Clear skies, golden landscapes, fewer crowds. Our favourite time.
- December-February: Winter. Snow in Manali, icy roads possible. Magical if you're prepared. Carry chains and warm gear. Check road status before departing.
Where to Stop on the Way
Breakfast: Murthal (60 km from Delhi)
The legendary parantha stop on NH44. Sukhdev, Amrik Sukhdev, and Gulshan are the big three. Stuffed paranthas with white butter and lassi — the perfect road trip fuel. Stop here if you left Delhi at 5 AM.
Lunch: Chandigarh or Bilaspur (250-350 km from Delhi)
If you're making good time, push past Chandigarh and stop at Bilaspur or Sundernagar for lunch. Highway dhabas here serve excellent rajma-chawal and dal makhani.
Kullu Valley (500 km from Delhi)
The last 40 km before Manali runs through the gorgeous Kullu Valley. If it's daylight, ask your driver to slow down — this is one of the most beautiful drives in India.
What to Pack
- Warm layers — even in summer, Manali nights drop to 10-15°C
- Rain jacket or umbrella (especially March-September)
- Comfortable walking shoes for Manali sightseeing
- Motion sickness medicine if anyone in the group needs it
- Power bank — charging points in the tempo traveller help, but a backup doesn't hurt
- Cash — many Manali shops don't accept cards
- Snacks and water for the mountain stretch where stops are fewer

The tempo traveller's AC and push-back seats make the long drive significantly more comfortable than a bus or car.
