The Golden Triangle — Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur — is India's most iconic tourist circuit, and for good reason. You get the Taj Mahal, Mughal history, Rajput forts, vibrant bazaars, and incredible food, all within a compact 700 km triangle. And while you can do this trip by train or plane, there's something uniquely satisfying about doing it by road in a tempo traveller with your group.
We've been running Golden Triangle tours since 2010, and in this guide, we're sharing everything we've learned — the best itinerary, realistic costs, route tips, and things most travel blogs won't tell you.
The Golden Triangle Route
The classic circuit goes like this:
- Delhi → Agra: 230 km via Yamuna Expressway (3 hours). The smoothest highway in India.
- Agra → Jaipur: 240 km via NH21 through Fatehpur Sikri (4-5 hours). Stop at the Mughal ghost city!
- Jaipur → Delhi: 280 km via NH48 (5 hours). One of India's best 6-lane highways.
Total distance: approximately 750 km. Total driving time: 12-14 hours spread over 4-5 days. Very doable, very enjoyable.
Suggested 5-Day Itinerary
Day 1: Delhi
If your group is from out of town, spend the first day exploring Delhi. Red Fort, Qutub Minar, India Gate, Humayun's Tomb, and Chandni Chowk for street food. Depart for Agra the next morning.
Day 2: Delhi → Agra
Leave Delhi by 6 AM. Reach Agra by 9 AM via the Yamuna Expressway. Visit the Taj Mahal at its least crowded (morning). Agra Fort after lunch. Evening at Mehtab Bagh for sunset Taj views. Overnight in Agra.
Day 3: Agra → Jaipur via Fatehpur Sikri
Morning visit to Fatehpur Sikri (40 km from Agra) — the abandoned Mughal capital is hauntingly beautiful. Continue to Jaipur. Arrive by evening. Explore Jaipur's old city and try local Rajasthani food.
Day 4: Jaipur Sightseeing
Full day in Jaipur: Amber Fort (morning, before the heat), Hawa Mahal, City Palace, Jantar Mantar. Evening at Nahargarh Fort for sunset. Shopping at Johari Bazaar for jewellery and textiles.
Day 5: Jaipur → Delhi
Morning departure. Smooth 5-hour drive on NH48. Arrive Delhi by afternoon. Trip complete!
How Much Does a Golden Triangle Trip Cost by Tempo Traveller?
Here's a realistic cost breakdown for a 5-day Golden Triangle trip:
- 9 Seater TT: Rs. 12,000 - 15,000 (vehicle cost)
- 12 Seater TT: Rs. 15,000 - 19,000
- 16 Seater TT: Rs. 18,000 - 23,000
- Toll charges: Approximately Rs. 2,000 - 2,500 for the full circuit
- Driver allowance: Rs. 1,500 (Rs. 300 × 5 days)
- Parking at monuments: Rs. 500 - 800 total
Split among 12 people in a 12-seater, the transport cost is about Rs. 1,500 - 2,000 per person for the entire trip. Hotels, food, and monument tickets are separate — but the transport is remarkably affordable.
Why a Tempo Traveller Is Perfect for the Golden Triangle
Three reasons: convenience, cost, and comfort. You don't have to rush to catch trains, navigate unfamiliar cities in separate taxis, or deal with luggage limits. Your group stays together, the AC keeps everyone cool (Agra and Jaipur can be scorching), and the experienced driver handles parking at busy monument sites where tourists in self-drive cars usually struggle.
Pro Tips from Our Experience
- Visit Taj Mahal at sunrise or right at opening — the crowds multiply after 9 AM.
- The Taj is closed on Fridays. Plan accordingly!
- Don't skip Fatehpur Sikri on the Agra-Jaipur stretch — it's underrated and magnificent.
- In Jaipur, do Amber Fort first thing in the morning before it gets hot.
- Carry cash for monument tickets and street shopping.
- The best dhabas on NH48 (Jaipur road) are near Neemrana and Manesar.
